One popular rumour which I've been hearing from many people nowadays as this month of January rounds up is that President Buhari is dead. But is he really dead? Well, not officially as far as I know. The Presidency which speaks on behalf of the President has already denied the rumour and still stands by what they've already told many Nigerians that the President is on a vacation in the UK.Personally, I believe that the best way to disprove such as rumour about the death of our President would be for him to appear in a recent video with a news channel such as the BBC or NTA. I believe that would effectively put an end to this growing feeling among Nigerians that he was actually dead or on a life support machine. What I've come to know is that a lot of Nigerians are not quick to believe anything that politicians say on TV or newspapers until they see things directly for themselves. The report by the Presidential spokesperson that Buhari was alive and well is not likely going to be believed by many. I've told many of my neighbours that Buhari was still alive but I'm even beginning to doubt myself since it's been many weeks since we last saw any video coverage about him.At many newspaper stands, I've noticed that readers engage in hot debates about Buhari's health and while some claim strongly that he's dead and that the Presidency was just delaying the report similar to what happened in the case of Late Yaradua, others claim that he is very much alive and has a right to keep silent until he is through with his vacation. For those who don't already know, our President was alive the last time we heard from him and prior to the time he was about going on a vacation to the UK and it would be unwise to start believing that he's dead when there is no solid evidence to prove it although it can equally be hard to disprove it given that there's been no recent live media coverage on him since he left for the supposed vacation.I guess another reason why many Nigerians believe that he is dead or dying is that at his age (over 70 years old), they feel that he is more likely to die in office than remain in office till 2019.One thing I've also noticed about this issue is that some people are already rejoicing about his supposed death because it seems they would gain something from it. They feel that given the harsh economic challenge many are already facing, a new president could change their fortune or at least make their lives better. Its probably normal to think that President Buhari won't live to be a 100 years old given the average lifespan of Nigerians but if he does, it would be an exception. It's probably understandable to think that his health won't allow him to continue in office for the next 8 years, one thing that is certain is that some people actually would like him to die soon given the way this death rumour has spread so far.I hope that he lives long enough to complete his tenure and fulfil his electoral promises but everything is in the hands of God.
