Yes. "Go into the world, be fruitful and multiply and fill all the earth". It appears that when Moses was writing this word of God in Genesis, God must have been talking to Nigerians. Nigeria's population at a staggering 150+ million is huge. It is almost laughable and makes one think that the only thing we do in this part of West Africa is to make babies. Would it be good for our shrinking resources, especially now that oil is becoming less attractive for a technologically advancing world?
What about many other parts of Africa where people can hardly feed themselves and there is a high rate of poverty. We should at least thank God that there is food in Nigeria and it would be hard for any Nigerian to just die of hunger - all he needs to do is to reach out or migrate to North or South and food would cease to be a problem. Really, in Nigeria, food is hardly the problem. I mean look at the faces of Nigerians, they mostly have big heads and pot bellies. Now compare that to other African countries who have been ravaged by war and famine and then you would know what I'm talking about. Perhaps, the only time when I can say that Nigerians really had a food problem was during the Biafran war in 1967 - 1970. A lot of Igbo people were starved to death (The figure was reported to be about 1 million) by restricting food supplies to the then Biafran region by the Nigerian army.........MOMENT OF SILENCE..........
Yet, despite the worst things that has happened in Nigeria, be it the civil war, the recurrent religious crises particularly in Northern states like Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Jos, the population has like doubled.
Like i said, we seem to be a very fertile people, pumping out babies more than death rates and will only e a matter of time before we become like China. If all Nigerians abroad, in Ghana, South Africa, England, US, China, Russia, Angola and other countries were to come back, i don't think there will be enough space for everyone , so i think it is better for us to just scatter round the world and show them a little bit of blackness and flava.
Do we really need a law to control our population? Maybe we don't need to because there a re a lot of people dying in Africa mostly because of preventable diseases and other causes. We still need to replace them.
