In his recent visit to Angola, in Africa, a Catholic dominated country, Pope Benedict made a remark about the use of condom in fighting HIV. He supported abstinence rather than using condoms to fight AIDS. He said that condoms rather than reducing the virus further escalated it. Some pressure groups and scientific bodies have kicked against his comment and are asking for a retraction of what his said. They seem to be saying that even though the Pope has been regarded as infallible, he did make a mistake in this regard. Pope Benedict has been known for making very sensitive comments since he entered Rome and sat on the throne of St Peter. We recall his earlier comment about Islam when he spoke about Mohammed, then a lot of Islamists asked for him to apologise and retract his statement. From what i have known about the Pope, he doesn't apologise for most of his public statements and I don't see any reason why he ought to.
The issue of condom and abstinence is one that is also deep rooted in Catholic teachings, in fact, being a Catholic myself, it is a matter of faith, the Church strongly opposes the use of condoms for whatever reasons, since it goes against God's plan. Although, it is a very hard teaching to adhere to, it is not something I see the Pope apologising for, ever.
In reality and looking at it scientifically, condoms actually have holes in them and a lot of the cheap ones that are actually finding their way into Africa have even large holes that cannot be seen by the naked eyes and may allow microscopic organisms or virus to pass through. Even if you were using a condom and you realize that your sex partner has HIV, would you still be confident to use one or two? Abstinence seems safer. I believe the Pope was right and in his own right about the issue if condom and AIDS. Over-promoting the condom in Africa may actually wipe off Africans from the face of the earth, we don't have to believe all what scientists tell us, for even they would agree that condoms are not 100% safe. The question still remains; "Are condoms really safe"?
