For a couple of days now preceding the Sallah, it has been reported that Nigeria's President, Umaru Musa Yar'adua had been flown to Saudi Arabia following rising health concerns related to his heart condition. Lately, we have been informed that he has a heart condition which was being treated and that he's in good condition. Nigerian leaders including the Vice President Jonathan Goodluck has\ve encouraged Nigerians to pray for the president concerning his health. I would say that is a good gesture and that praying for our leaders is something every patriotic and religious person in Nigeria ought to be doing now.
We are like in the second phase of our democracy after a successful democratic to democratic government transition but we can't say that it has been sailing all smoothly. There's still a lot of tension between politicians and political parties, the north and south, Nigeria's many tribes as well as Christians and Muslims in the country. I was privileged to be in a group discussion about the distracting health of Nigeria's number one citizen and while some people supported the idea of praying for Yaradua, there was one particular person who said, "Why should he have to pray for the president? Let's God's will be done".
The person in question reasoned that if it's God's will for Yaradua to recover fully or vacate the office for the V.P, then let it be, but that he does not support the ides of praying for someone who had been sick from day one in office.
While I may see a little bit or reason with the person, Is it not too cruel and inhuman to wish that a President of Nigeria should not complete his tenure?
The truth is that, Yaradua's health whether we like it or not is affecting the way things are happening in Nigeria. Yaradua, from what I've seen has good intentions for Nigeria and is good health will equally be beneficial to everyone irrespective of tribe, religion or location.
From our own point of view, would you support praying for President Yar'adua?
