Blogging is a growing profession in Nigeria and although there are not quite a lot of Nigerian bloggers yet, a couple of the ones available still make a reasonable amount of income online. Blogging is seen more as a passion rather than just as a profession but with the growth of internet traffic from Nigeria, it is taking the other side. What benefits does one gain from setting up a blog? Although blogging can help share information, thoughts and activities of a person, firm or group of people to the public for the greater good, it can also be seen as a means of livelihood and a necessary one especially if your are living in a country like Nigeria. We already quite a group of popular blogs, they are still mostly in its infant stages ad blog niching seems to be taking place, Nigerian bloggers are setting themselves up in areas that will enable them earn continual income in the future from their blogs.
A blog is taken from the word web log which relates to continual posting of content to an existing web to update it and keep it fresh and new. Blogs are becoming a means of generating online income for webmasters and professional bloggers alike who have various means of doing so which includes- Online advertising by third parties like Google Adsense
- Sale of informational and related products like ebooks
- Affiliate sales
- Product and web reviews
- Email marketing
- SubscriptionsOf course there are many other ways by which Nigerian bloggers do and may still generate income from blogging but the most popular of these means is by Google adsense.
Google adsense are third party adverts that you may allow to be displayed on your blog for a commission which is based on pay per click. This means that the blogger gets paid when such ads are clicked on by genuine site visitors.
Of course, you must have seen the ads when you visit most information websites and blogs as they are displayed with the logo - "Ads by Google". If you have a blog or high traffic website and still would want to monetize it somehow, I will advise you to apply for Google adsense.Earnings from Google adsense are not really as huge as advertised on the media by self professed Adsense gurus. To be honest about it, earnings for most publishers in Nigeria can be as low as $50 per month to as high as $3000 per month.
A lot of Nigerian bloggers still don't know how to optimize their earnings from blogging but quite a few have mastered it and are not planning to leave the game any time sooner. Are you a Nigerian blogger and do you earn money online from blogging? Feel free to participate in the poll - How much do you earn online per month?

They are many ways they can do that, but one primary way is through advertisers patronizing their blogs
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Nosa on January 29, 2010 at 12:09:09: I am currently making more than $700 a month in Nigeria and I only update my blog weekly. What you need to do is blog about high traffic topics that the world is searching for and advertisers pay a high ppc on.
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Uzochi Umeh on January 29, 2010 at 12:09:53: What kind of topic do you blog about? I doubt if you are really making that much in Nigeria
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Nosa on January 29, 2010 at 12:13:05: Well, it may surprise you, but I blog about car insurance and health. Those who visit my blog do so because they are searching for something important and are more willing to click on adverts. Things like heart surgery, cataracts, mesothelioma, car and home insurance are things not many bloggers know about but it is really hot cake if you focus on it even from Nigeria. My blog is not focused on Nigeria but I do make quite a good sum from it.
I am just saying this so that you guys may believe that you can still make good money blogging in naija

Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Felix Okoli on January 29, 2010 at 12:16:24: Still on the topic though, it will be nice if we have an estimate of how much Nigerian bloggers make online from their blogs
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Seyi on January 29, 2010 at 12:17:05: Nice discussion. So people actually make money online. I thought it was all a scam
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Kola Ololade on January 29, 2010 at 12:18:06: I think the best way to know if someone actually makes money online from their blogs is to check their alexa ranking in order to get an idea of their traffi
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Felix Okoli on January 29, 2010 at 12:19:19: Alexa rankings are fair but may not be an accurate means of estimating income. Besides, sites with low traffic but high paying ads can still make more from sites with lower traffic
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Kayus on January 29, 2010 at 12:20:21: I want to know, is it better to add Google adsense to a forum or a blog. Which will give more income?
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Deji on January 29, 2010 at 12:21:00: I applied for Google adsense but was not accepted. What do I do?
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Felix Okoli on January 29, 2010 at 12:24:47: @Kayus, from a discussion I saw at webmasterworld, Google adsense nromally ranks forums low even though they normally have high traffic. Blogs are ranked higher and have higher payouts than traditional forums. I think it depends however on the number of people you have visiting your forum. Having a blog of 1000 pages may pay you more than having a forum with 100,000 pages.
@ Deji, I guess Google adsense must have told you the reason why you were no accepted. It is most probably because your blog is new or you have little or nor posted blog posts. Try and make more posts to your blog up to 200 pages and work on it for about 6 months before re-applying.
Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Emmanuel on January 29, 2010 at 12:26:22: I make only $20 a month from Google adsense after working hard for 1 year.
I am thinking of switching to Adbrite but don't know if I will make much better income from it

Re: Nigerian bloggers - How much do you earn online per month? Posted by Felix Okoli on July 24, 2010 at 22:55:58: Well, it doesn't have to be 200 pages, that is just a technique I believe that works. If you can at least make 50 posts on your blog without copying from other websites and making them unique, you can get more income from Google adsense and make sure you don't click on your ads.
