The very first elections in 2010 will be a governorship election and it will be held in Anambra on Saturday, the 6th of February 2010.
It will be a test for INEC as to their preparedness as well as the will of the people as it will help determine which party really has a stronghold on the state. The seat of the governor has witnessed a lot of ever since the return of military power to civil rule in 1999 on Obasanjo by General Abdusalam Abubakar. From election rigging to kidnapping of a sitting governor(Ngige), removal by court of a governor(Andy Uba) to bring in the incumbent(Peter Obi) who is also seeking a second term under the same popular political machinery(APGA) that brought him to power.
Naturally, Obi has been the true choice of the people when he first campaigned for his election under APGA which also featured Odumegwu Ojukwu running as their presidential aspirant, but the second term campaign may not be as smooth as the first due to the calibre of persons in the race such as Ekwunife, a catholic and also from a popular south eastern party - PPA as well as being a woman. We are not forgetting the flamboyant Chris Ngige during whose tenure, Anambra has relative peace and security with the Bakassi boys outfit. Then there is the ruling party's candidate, Andy Uba from the PDP which has a way in winning elections.
I am hoping that at least the elections tomorrow or whenever it will hold, will be a true and fair one without any violence, rigging or whatever but will just show the true winner of the governorship election.
This election, if true and fair, will really establish the political party that will dominate Anambra elections or some period of time.Latest news: A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as currently constituted lacks the required quorum to conduct elections is tomorrow's governorship election in Anambra StateI don't see the elections holding any time soon.
Update: Peter Obi emerges winner of Anambra 2010 elections. Great!
