Just when I thought that our noble President Jonathan was the only politician with an Obama factor, by knowing how to connect with the active Nigerian population, I found out today that the governor of Lagos State - Babatunde Fashola, is also on Facebook. Facebook is a website that allows individuals, groups and even celebrities to have a page where they can connect with their friends and fans all over the world as long as there are connected to the internet. With Facebook, a growing number of politicians in the US have been able to connect 24-7 to their fans and probably helped them win elections. With Facebook, one can easily meet one on one with people you ordinarily would not be able to meet in the real world. Facebook is allowing politicians, even in Nigeria, to sell their plans and ideals to a much larger audience than never before. Facebook is even becoming a more powerful tool for making adverts and winning hearts and yet it is still free. Fashola's Vs Jonathan's Facebook fan page
The funny thing about Fashola's facebook account when compared to that of Jonathan is that the latter already has more than 61,000 fans while that of Jonathan has more than 160,000 fans. One quick way people and public figures can be able to capture more fans is by advertising their facebook accounts and addresses especially with a unique facebook shortname or url that will help people to easily visit your page.
How is their facebook account updated?
Well, I doubt if the governor or President were the ones doing the updates themselves except on rare occasions because running a fan page like that on facebook, especially for a Nigerian politician, would require a full time staff and so I'm guessing they must have a team that publishes their statements for them online. It is not just the politicians that are getting on this internet bandwagon but a couple of Nollywood celebrities, aside from having their own website, also have facebook accounts to connect with their fansGo to Fashola's Facebook page
