MTN is a big company coming from South Africa and is becoming a global brand. MTN biggest success to date has been in Nigeria, a country with virtually no reliable telecommunication facility prior to the GSM revolution.
MTN is big in Nigeria and may very well be it's biggest Telecoms company operating with consistent huge profits for the Group.
MTN has brought good things for people everywhere they go, bridging communication gaps and connecting communities and you wouldn't forget the efforts of the MTN Foundation which is adding credit to MTN's social responsibility.
But it is not just about communication via the GSM network that is being offered, MTN equally offers mobile and internet browsing for her teeming subscribers.
The world is on a global age and the internet has become the most aggressive way of communicating and bringing people closer to each other. Whether it is just for social networking like for Facebook or publishing your status via micro-blogging on twitter, checking your email on Yahoo or Gmail, you need the internet and MTN is providing that service.When MTN first entered Nigeria, it started offering free browsing via mobile and the web and to set up for the mobile free browsing, what the subscriber has to do is to send a text to MTN indicating the intention to begin using the service and this will prompt MTN to send teh configuration settings to the phone if it can be configured OTA (Over The Air) if the phone is capable of receiving it or ask the subscriber to set it up manually for certain phones. The fact that it was a free browsing service attracted many Nigerians to begin using it until the hammer struck and MTN began charging for the service on a variety of packages such as:- Pay as You Go
- 24 hours plan
- 1 month plan
- Night plan MTN offers internet service to her customers on a variety of platforms which can be;
- WAP: Slowest. Good for mobile phones
- GPRS: Fast for mobile phones
- EDGE: Faster than GPRS
- 3G: Fastest. Useful for browsing on 3G phones and HSPDA devicesWell, I can see, I benefited highly from the MTN Free browsing campaign from MTN while it lasted as it helped me to get used to mobile browsing but that was until MTN started billing for it. So for now, MTN only offers free browsing if you are visiting their mobile website @mtnonline.com. So if you are visiting websites like loaded.mtnonline.com, music.mtnonline.com or wap.mtnonline.com with your mtn sim phone, you will not be charged until you move out of that site.
Due to the above discovery, a lot of so called Nigerian hackers have been causing a hullabaloo on the web and other media about their discovery of how to browse free on MTN using a new technique and would only be offering this info for a price if the prospective buyer is interested.
The idea behind this is that the hacker tried to reconfigure the MTN GPRS settings and changed the homepage from wap.mtnonline.com to loaded.mtnonline.com@google.com/gwt/x?u and then when the person gets to that address, he just puts in the url of the website he wants to go to all the while giving MTN servers the impression that he is still on the homepage i.e. wap.mtnonline.com which will now not be chargeable. This was the old hack and a lot of people used it but it lasted for a short while. MTN certainly knows when subscribers are breaking into their internet browsing system without paying and so when they discover such attempts or popular hacks, they block the loophole.
The truth is that from the way knowledge is growing in the online community, I think they will always be a way for people who want to bypass the MTN system to get free browsing but I also know that MTN is equal to the task of blocking such successful hacks into their network.
My advise to you is that MTN Free browsing does not exist in the long run, if it exists, it doesn't last for long and so the best thing is to subscribe for the internet service by paying N500 for a days browsing, N2500 for a month's night browsing or even N10,000 for a 24 hour month browsing.
Funny enough, MTN GPRS browsing has been slow recently as I only use it as a standby internet connection when my main one fails me. I subscribed for the daily 24 hrs service at N500 but still, for the whole 24 hours, I was not able to do anything constructive with my phone, not to even check my Yahoo mail. MTN, this is really disappointing. While it is good to discourage people hacking MTN for free internet browsing, I think MTN should equally be scolded by the NCC for it's poor Internet service which is mostly prepaid. At times I think I would have preferred a Pay as you Go internet service from them when there is poor service.
