Well, I was wondering what the US was doing when the 2003 elections were held and then the 2007 elections. Perhaps they could have said something. Why now?
I think they've seen a lot of protests in Abuja by many political activists and NGOs including lastly the NLC which called for the removal of Iwu from INEC.
Do they consider Professor Maurice Iwu to be PDP's rigging machine? Well I would say of recent some elections held by the Commisions were not far from the people's choice such as Anambra, Lagos, Kwara, Kaduna, Edo but concerning Ekiti and the AC, we are not yet sure what happened there and then talk about the presidential election that brought in Baba go slow.
Ordinarily, I don't support the removal of Iwu from INEC just because the US says so or even as at now because it is already late. Bringing in a new INEC chairman now will not consolidate our democracy since the person will have only a short period to learn all the intricacies concerning INEC and how they handle elections and electoral fraud. Bringing a new replacement for Iwu may cause instability in INEC which could affect the 2011 elections. If Iwu was to removed, it should have been earlier and not now cause removing him now will only be - "Too little, too late".
