No doubt Nigerian banks are among the biggest banks in Africa and I can say they did well in bringing the credit card brands like Mastercard and Visa and in this way helped a lot of Nigerians get more meaningful experience on the web with online payments. When it comes to online payments however, there is still one big fish that continues to delude Nigerians and this is Paypal. Paypal is actually one of the biggest means of sending and receiving money online to anyone with an email account and it works with banks as well as credit card companies. Paypal has helped a lot of people to become internet millionaires in countries like the US and UK just because of the ability to do quick and easy online business without the hassles of a merchant account. One thing that has continued to dissatisfy Nigerians is the fact that Paypal does not allow Nigerian residents to open and operate a Paypal account. I read in an article that Paypal is already in South Africa and it was pioneered by a bank there called FNB and what the South African customer has to do is have an account with FNB to be able to operate the Paypal account.
My question then is when will a Nigerian bank be the first to usher in Paypal into Nigeria, or are we awaiting for a messiah like Ecobank which was the first in bringing credit cards to Nigeria. What Paypal I think needs it a credible partner in Nigeria and would not want to just shy away from Nigeria because of perceived fraud.
Paypal on its own should by now realize that due to the economic recession coming from the US and currently ravaging several countries in the Eurozone, they will need to expand their nets elsewhere and invest in an emerging economy like Nigeria where they would definitely need to be in the nearest future, if there would still be anything like Paypal then, for the Nigeria of tomorrow.
