Since the introduction of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in Nigeria, cash handling has really reduced especially for those who live in the city and have easy access to ATM machines by means of their ATM cards. People no longer see the needs to carry excess cash at home when they already have an ATM card and an ATM machine is not so far from home. Access to those machines are like a stone's throw away and mostly operational 24-7 including Sundays.Growing unease with ATM usage in Nigeria
However, nowadays, ATM is increasingly generally referred to as Automated Thieving Machines due to the somewhat deceptive manner in which the machines tend to be behave when bank customers want to withdraw their hard earned money. Imagine putting in your ATM card into the machine in order to withdraw N10,000 only for the card to be returned to you and yet you receive a debit text message on your phone without cash ever coming out of the machine. There have been times when customers equally withdraw with the ATM card but instead of the so called smart machine to do a single debit, it debits you twice and at times thrice. Complaints at the bank
So what do you do next? You take a short break from work the next day to go your bank in order to fill an ATM complaint form but in the end, they practically do nothing about it. You find out that each time you go to the bank to make a complaint or follow up on an earlier complaint, they tell you that they are working on it while at the same time wasting your time and money.
I had been a victim of such ATM problems and mine was that I was debited twice but it has not been reversed till now even thought I made a complaint at my bank. If you call customer service, they would tell you to go to your bank and fill a form and when you do just that, it ends there without much rectification.Rising cases of ATM complaints at banks
If you go to most banks in Nigeria on a working day, you would see that there are a lot of people making such complaints daily but a large portion of the blame would have to be on the major ATM providers or the more than 20 banks and that is Interswitch. Although Interswtich has constantly advised users of its debit card to protect their pin from ATM thieves at machine points while also taking care to look for keyloggers at the location before using your ATM card. People have also been warned not to send personal information on the web to anyone pretending to be Interswitch or your bank as most of them are scammers. It is true that a lot of people's ATM card has been compromised and that's why I think Interswitch introduced a new card called Verve which has more security, however, there are still rising cases of ATM complaints in Nigeria
