Well our parents beat us when we were young. I am yet to find anyone now who is between 20 - 40 years that was not flogged or beaten by their parents when they were growing up. But when we compare the moral behaviour of Nigerian children to American or European children, you find out that Nigerian children and youths are more respectful and behave much better. In some developed countries, it is even against the law to beat children.
In Nigeria, there is no law against beating or flogging your child but if you mistakenly kill your child, then it would be a criminal offense. There is nothing like social services taking over your child in case you abuse them by beating. Maybe, it is because we use the rod, that is why we tend to hold onto morals much better than other countries.
Well not everyone will agree. Some people feel that you should not beat children for whatever reason when they disobey or offend you, but it seems that majority of Nigerians still believe that if you spare the rod, you will spoil the child.
What do you think?

not at all occasions.
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Felicia on September 10, 2010 at 13:47:04: Why not. It worked for my parents when they trained me. If you don't discipline your kids, chances are that they would go with the wind. You need to teach them right and wrong and there are certain things that only physical punishment can solve. You may not hit them all the time but some behaviours demand serious spanking
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by mykel okechukwu on September 12, 2010 at 01:16:41: nope .i think there are better ways to make a child see reason with you rather than use the rod....ways like grounding him or her, slash of pocket money , adding more chores for him or her
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Emma on September 12, 2010 at 01:16:41: You will have to spank him at one time or the other. What if the kid has other ways of making money rather than pocket money. What if he/she disobeys to do any chores? There are certain kids who are too stubborn to obey anything you tell them except with the cane.
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Audu Karimu on September 11, 2010 at 15:35:30: Beating may not be a wholistic solution, and sometimes, it post danger for the child. But one cannot completely ruled out (symbolic) beating of a child when he/she misbehave.
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by mrs dorcas okoh on September 12, 2010 at 04:09:04: yea,in some instance we should beat them when they misbehave but we should not make it an habit cos too much of beating will only make them more stubborn,so in place of beating sometime we should scold them, let them know what they are doing is wrong and is not going to help them in any way and i believe they will change for the better,is not all about beating.thank you
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Onafuwa Omosola on September 13, 2010 at 07:36:07: It is not OK to beat children when they misbehaved, they only need to be told what is good and what is bad and the consequences of it.

Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Felix Okol on September 15, 2010 at 14:09:28: I think it's ok to spank your little ones once in a while especially if they are too stubborn or did something that requires a spanking. However by the time they grow up to say 20 - 25, you would have to stop beating them since by then you would have grown weaker and they are turning to adults. Then you have to start using the power of words and train them to be independent. By then they would have to move out of your house and have a family of theirs.
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Dominic Chikeka on September 16, 2010 at 05:53:41: Dont beat the Child but correct the Child and tell him why what he has done is viewed as wrong
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by ugo on September 17, 2010 at 06:26:41: apart ffrom the bible teaching us to correct a child by flgging we as african know quiet that children who were groomed under strict handling always turn out as best manners at adult probably for the grassroot reprooves.
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Pat on November 24, 2010 at 10:23:23: Anyone who condones child abuse is downright evil and despicably cowardly. Honestly, how pathetic is it for a grown man or grown woman to pound and whip a little child or teenager? So pathetic! So evil! How can you even call yourselves Christians?
Chirst, peace be upon him, preached peace and love in solidarity; but that message seems to have been lost among some of you who claim to be of Christ. For surely there is nothing peaceful about caning your child until she can hardly stand and is left scarred both physically and mentally. This is not Christ-like. In fact, when you commit such a despicable act, you act just as those who whipped and tortured Jesus Christ.
How dare you whip and torture the innocent and call yourselves Christians? How dare you whip and torture the young and call yourselves responsible adults? How dare you!
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Felix on November 24, 2010 at 10:23:23: It is funny that you are taking this to the Bible but fail to remember that even Christ whipped adults in the temple when they were selling
Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Godwin on April 12, 2011 at 04:40:20: Well, I think mild discipline with love is not totally bad. What matters most is the level of stubborness exhibited by the child and how the child reacts to the correction. Certainly, some children no matter how hard you flog will still be stubborn, some may even inherited stubborness from their parents,so now you can see see the importance or otherwise of beating. All them same, train your child with love and care. God help us.

Re: Is it Ok to beat children when they misbehave? Posted by Tolulope Falana on June 18, 2011 at 06:43:49: Have you asked the persons responsible for these acts of manhandling and child abuse what offense these kids commit? Surely, you will be told stupid reasons why the child should be beaten to coma. This is not acceptable as the whole essence of correction for the purpose of learning is defeated. How can you possibly tell me that by beating a child with horse whip and cutting his/her skin with razor blaze, you are enforcing law and order in your house? This is barbaric and such persons that practice this should desist or be made to face the full wrath of the law! Shikena
