Drinking "pure water" is actually in vogue everywhere in Nigeria. Even if you are one of those who are used to drinking only bottled water, you may by chance or mistake drink the satchet water once in a while.
Drink pure water and die is the title I have chosen to give this write up because it is happening all over places in Lagos and mostly among people who commute regularly with commercial buses. It may not be common but I have seen someone who almost died after drinking a satchet on his way to Badagry.
He entered the bus which took some time to load. Usually these thieves don't care what finally happens to their victim as long as they get to steal from them. When the victim entered the bus and sat at the back, possibly the rogues(which involved a pure water seller that roams abut the bus and a passenger) would monitor their victm and see if they could possibly get something from them and then urge them to drink pure water.
How it happend to this person was that after he boarded the bus, another person boarded to sit close to him. He was not thirsty but the rouge passenger wanted to drink water and called his partner in crime, the pure water seller and bought a satchet. He brings out some money and due to the fact that the seller has no change, the rouge asks the victim if he wants to drink but he says he is not thirsty but after urging his saying he has no change to give the seller, the victim agrees to drink. But the victim drinks only a little and throws the rest away.
The next thing that happens is that he saw himself in the hospital after falling dizzy in the bus. Even the driver and conductor said they didn't know what happened to him. I even thought that it was due to a hear condition only to find out later that he probably drank pure water that had been drugged by people who robbed him of more than N70,000.
So if you are going to drink pure water or even eat any food on the way, make sure that it is not on the bus or public place where no friend or partner is with you. Also buying things on the road can be dangerous, instead buy only from shops or stores that actually have an address and not on the road.
