Today, Nigeria marks her 50th Independence Anniversary and it is a national holiday which has been celebrated annually every October 1 for more than 49 years after which Nigeria got its independence from Britain.
The places to be for this event are in Abuja where it will be at its peak as well as Lagos which is Nigeria's former capital. Events are already going on as people wake up today in places like the national stadium, millennium park and the theaters.
Both Federal and state governments are partaking in the celebration and this is one that will very well go on till Monday.
Nigeria gained its independence in 1960 after many years of control by her colonial master - Great Britain. It was actually Britain that amalgamated ethnic groups across the Niger and Benue areas and formed what is known today as Nigeria.
