Nigeria is a big country and has the largest human population in Africa with a diverse people in language, culture and religion.
Talking about Religion, Nigeria's population is divided into Muslims mainly in the north and Christians in the south in a ration of about 50% each for a nation of over 150 million and still counting.
Over the years and as a result of the freedom which democracy brings after many years of military rule, some Nigerian states, mainly from the core Muslim north decided to adopt Sharia one after the other following Zamfara state which was the first to do so when a current Senator Sani Yerima was governor(The former governor was recently involved in a scandal for allegedly getting married to a child under 15 years).
What motivated the states to adopt sharia is not yet exactly clear as one side makes one think that it is simply to sanitise the north and promote good moral behaviour among people. However some other critics see it as nothing more than a political tool by politicians to win votes from people using religion.
Whichever way you look at it, Zamfara took the first step and a whole lot of other nations followed suit and here they are:
The Nigerian states that adopted Sharia includes:As at 2009 1 Zamfara State (January 27, 2000)
2 Kano State (June 21, 2000)
3 Sokoto State
4 Katsina State
5 Bauchi State (June 2001)
6 Borno State
7 Jigawa State
8 Kebbi State
9 Yobe StateThe following 3 states have also instituted sharia in some parts with large Muslim populations 10 Kaduna
11 Niger State (January 13, 2000)
12 Gombe State
The effect of this on the Nigerian constitution is not yet clear and how the rights of non Muslims living in such states will be protected is not exactly known supposing they choose not to be tried under Sharia law.
