Although the popular opinion had been that Kayode Fayemi was the real winner of the governorship election held in Ekiti state in 2007, the position was given to a PDP candidate - Segun Oni, by the INEC under Maurice Iwu's chairmanship.
AC had won comfortably in Lagos state and then was denied justice in far away Edo state only for a while until the courts decided that it was Oshiomhole's right. Through the courts, which perhaps has remained the last point of call for justice as far as elections are concerned, Adam Oshiomhole became governor. Then there was the Ekiti state debacle as elections results were being returned from one town to the other in Ekiti, keen election watchers had given the victory to Fayemi only for INEC to announce later that it was Segun Oni that won. Fayemi perhaps being the humble and law abiding citizen that he is, chose to depend on Justice and the rule of law and sought for it through the courts.
What was in Fayemi's manifesto that made the good people of Ekiti to vote massively for him? Well in his manifesto, Mr Fayemi presented poverty, education and healthcare as his priority. It was also probably due to his closeness to the people during campaigns and then the AC broom, coupled with successive PDP government neglect over the years that probably made the people to support him, but INEC slowed him down.
Now the Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin(Kwara state capital) has sacked the Ekiti State governor, Segun Oni and asked Dr Fayemi Kayode to take his rightful place as governor of the state. Based on the 1999 Constitution, the Appeal Court is the final arbiter of justice when it comes to governorship election petitions and so this puts and end to the election dispute. When will Dr Kayode Fayemi be sworn in? Well, we are waiting.
However some days ago a bill to make to make the Supreme Court as the final arbiter for governorship election petitions passed its second reading in the Senate as part of the National Assembly's ongoing efforts to amend the 199 Constitution.
