How would you feel if IBB becomes the next president of Nigeria? Surprised? Happy? Sad? Cheated? Would it feel as if we were back to the 1980s?
But IBB could actually become PDP's presidential candidate in 2011 if the PDP votes for him and that would very well end the debate about who becomes Nigeria's next President.
Already we know that the incumbent always has power to influence people and votes. Already we've seen that in how he rejigged INEC as well some top men in the army. In Iwu's place, Jonathan put JEGA which is not actually different from his initials - Jonathan Ebele Goodluck Azikiwe.
Jonathan declared his intention to run for president again and this time he is presenting himself. During tha last presidential election which was popularly believed to have been swung in favour of the north, Jonathan ran with his predecessor Umaru Yaradua and won the voted which helped maintain the PDP in power. President Yaradua however died in office and it appears that the finger of God gave the mantle to Jonathan who truly has a lot of Goodluck. Jonathan became president of Nigeria after Yaradua and the north had had it for 3 years after Obasanjo's 8th years and it seems the north feels cheated that the south should keep on holding power beyond 2011.
Normally, politicians are aware of the overwhelming power of the incumbent in deciding what happens in 2011 and especially now that the elections are drawing near.
IBB being an older politician and actually the oldest and wisest man still in the race has not announced any decision to step aside for anyone yet in the PDP. Already the PDP has Jonathan, Atiku and IBB running for the same race, we may have to wait for the PDP convention in order to find out who eventually becomes the party's flagbearer.
IBB tactically stepped aside for and supported Yaradua prior to the PDP's last presidential primaries but it appears that he is truly serious about this coming election after his public announcement at the Eagles Square, the campaign offices being opened and his website voteibb.org. Jonathan appears to be only Facebooking and perhaps still counts on the younger and more dynamic members of the PDP to win him the votes. However, Jonathan's youthful group may be split by another youthful group that is loyal to former VP Atiku Abubakar who is seen as a very influential member of the PDP.
If Jonathan clinches the ticket from PDP, it may cause divisions within the party and also If IBB wins the primaries, it would prove that he still has a lot of supporters within the PDP and he would probably become Nigeria's next President.
