There is this saying that if you live fast, you die fast and it all seems to be coming true. Taking a flight from Abuja to Lagos and back is probably one of the fastest ways of connecting between our 2 capital cities but how safe is it really? Well, with the recent air crash at Ikeja Lagos, it seems a lot of frequently flying passengers may no longer be at ease flying and some may have resorted to the good old road trip.Flying from Abuja to Lagos can really save one a lot of time but what do you do when you know that air crashes have fewer survivors than compared to road accidents. At least if there were road accidents, there is a higher chance of survival. Why do people enjoy air travel really?
Well Nigeria is a big country and there are places you would want to go that you would rather go by air due to bad roads. If our roads were really good and maintained by the federal and state govts, more people would rather travel by road rather than air. Here are a couple of reasons why I think people prefer to travel by air rather than road:- Speed: It saves a lot of time. Air travel is much faster, connecting cities within 45 mins
- To meet appointments: Crucial business meetings can mostly be achieved by air
- Fashionable
- Comfortable: Travelling by air on a business or first class is really comfortable.
- No hold ups or go slows: There is hardly any traffic when you fly unlike road trips which could lock you in one place for several hours
- Bad roads: The roads for travelers are really bad and even cause a lot of accidents. Chinua Achebe was a victim of such and he had to seek refuge in the USA.
- To avoid expressway armed robbers: There is not much security on the express way for road travelers than air travelers in Nigeria. Why travelers may switch to taking road trips:
With the recent air crash and history of crashes in Nigeria's aviation industry, there would be a growing number of air travelers who may switch to the good old luxury bus trips since they would lose some confidence in air travel and here's why:- Increasing pessimism about security in Nigeria's aviation industry
- Increasing costs of traveling by air
- Weak govt regulationShould I opt for travelling by road?
Well there are a lot of advantages of travelling by road even if you were going from Abuja to Lagos such as:- It could be much safer
- It may take time but gets you there
- It saves you a lot of money
- It allows you to enjoy the landscape and beauty of different places in Nigeria
- You can connect with different people along the way
One question I really wanted to ask guys in the aviation industry is: "Should airplanes over 20 years really be in use in Nigeria"? Perhaps it's time to review the age limit for commerical airplanes in the country.
