It seems that the North is really serious about the 2011 presidential election and are not willing to let Jonathan Goodluck have an easy ride yet. In the news today, it has been reported that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has been chosen as the North's consensus candidate by the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF).
Initially one would have thought that Bukola Saraki of Kwara state who previously announced his intention to run for the presidential elections would have been chosen seeing the caliber of supporters and his credentials. Then we also saw the mammoth crowd at IBB's declaration all going to show that the PDP really has a handful of influential candidates all gearing up for 2011.
Now we have not yet heard from Atiku for sometime after his last presidential campaign on the AC platform to run against Yaradua and Jonathan who were in the PDP.
Atiku Abubakar was a strong PDP member and from there he won the 1999 elections with Obasanjo who became the president but as the going was not that smooth, he left the PDP for the AC in order to achieve his undying desire to be Nigeria's President. During the elections which he ran against Jonathan's PDP and Buhari's ANPP, Atiku's AC came a distant third and may not be likely to gain more momentum by the time the elections come up again in 2011. However, Atiku planned ahead and returned back to the PDP with some waivers that would allow him to run for primaries again within the ruling party. How Atiku became the anointed candidate
The reports are not yet clear on how Atiku was selected but the NPLF selected him from among a number of other northern candidates like IBB, Bukola Saraki, Aliyu Gusau and Buhari but no criteria was given on how he became their preferred candidate. All the other candidates are expected to support Atiku in order to ensure that the North presents only one candidate to prevent Jonathan from remaining President after 2011.Assessing the Former Vice President
Atiku Abubakar is a young and experienced politician who knows that it takes to campaign successfully and win elections and I'm guessing he already has a couple of names in his black book - Names of those who worked against his campaign at the last presidential elections, and I' guessing, OBJ is on that list too.
If he becomes the only candidate from the North to slug out the primary election with Jonathan, it may pose a serious problem for the latter and power within party may be shifted.
