Most visited Nigerian websites - December 2010

These are not the most visited websites in Nigeria but the most visited Nigerian websites. Currently, Alexa(a ranking website) has a list of 100 websites driving Nigerian traffic of which Yahoo is number one, but from that list I have been able to get the indigenous Nigerian websites which are growing on this 100 list.

My last update on this series was for October 2010

Internet Forums
Nairaland remains the most visited Nigerian website and it is an online forum with over 600,000 registered members which would justify it's being at that position. Also with a dynamic forum software like smf that works for both mobile and web, Nairaland keeps growing and may very well become the most visited website in Nigeria someday. Currently Yahoo.com is the most popular website for Nigerians followed by facebook and then Google.

Newspapers
Punch, a newspaper website in Nigeria comes second and I was thinking that a news website with all its published content would be first. Although it is at a distant 12th in relation to the 7th position for Nairaland.com, i shows that it may soon catch up or overtake the first position for Nigerian websites.
This means that there is strong competition between Nigerian Newspapers and Nigerian Forums for the Nigerian web traffic and only time will tell who wins

Others
Only one Nigerian bank made the list - Gtbank.com
Only one Telecom company made the list - mtnonline.com
Popular Job websites, forums and newspaper websites made the list.

Similarities
The websites that come in the first 100 most visited websites in Nigeria have some of these in common:
- They use Smf or Wordpress (free publishing softwares)
- They are monetized with Google Adsense
- With the exception of a the Airline websites, they are mostly constantly updated websites with newer content being added on a daily basis.
- They consist of online newspapers and forums
