The former VP during President Obasanjo's tenure is back in the PDP and he is seriously in the race to become PDP's presidential candidate for the 2011 election. Already we know that the incumbent President Jonathan is also in the race with his VP Sambo. Jonathan has not relented in telling people and Nigerians especially on facebook about his desire to continue in service from 2011. This current tenure that he found himself in was actually carried over from late President Yaradua who was not able to complete his first term and so Jonathan being the VP, was sworn in as the President of the Federal Republic.
Atiku Abubakar is a strong force within the ruling PDP is the consensus candidate for the NPLF after receiving a somewhat political blessing from the Northern political group headed by Ciroma. Atiku is actually the youngest candidate the northern group within the PDP has presented as a consensus candidate and their hope is to have all northern delegates to at least vote for him when the primary comes up. There is however the incumbent factor, the Yaradua constituency factor as well as the Sambo factor all of which are in support of Jonathan Goodluck to continue as president. Already, Sambo has reminded Nigerians that by virtue of his being the Vice president, hence number 2, he alone is the authentic voice and leader of the north. It show that even Sambo knows what politicking is all about.
Given this set up and the factors working against Atiku, including the US scandal, the odds may very well favour Jonathan Goodluck to become president again.
It would have been easier if Atiku was running against a fresh candidate than an incumbent who could easily get support by appearing at public functions covered by the Nigerian Television Authority(NTA).
In Nigeria and since 1999, there has not been an incumbent president that did not serve out two terms so it would be hard for Jonathan not to gain the support of the PDP given that he is more nationally loved than Atiku who may appear as just a northern candidate rather than a Nigerian candidate.
If Atiku Abubakar's campaign was able to outsmart Jonathan group and win the primaries, then it would be a turning point and history in the making. Let the best man win.

It will be most unfortunate if the power of incubency is not effectively used . And as formal university lecturer, l am pretty sure the import of that is known to him. May l advice that the post election appointment should not be based on political patronanage, but rather on COMPETENCIES. That is about the one good thing that count in favour of Atiku-- that he facilitated the appointment of competent hands in the regime of OBJ/ATIKU .ie Ugozi Uweala
