This is the begining of a New Year and I'm amazed that someone or group of persons could actually commit a terrorist act like this in Abuja - Our nation's capital. I thought it was just Jos or Kaduna or somewhere else in northern Nigeria due to growing religious or political restlessness.
When I read this news today, three things came to mind:
- It could be religious terrorists
- It could just be politicians trying to destablilize Jonathan's credibility for 2011 presidential election
- It may be supporters of Laurent Gbagbo trying to warn Nigeria not to meddle in Ivory Coast I think this is more than Just Boko Haram or mere religious fanatics but whichever way it finally plays, it is truly a slap in our face as a federal republic and should be seen as a lapse in security.
I think it is high time we start installing CCTV cameras across the Federal republic after all, what have we been doing with our oil money for 50 years if we don't at least have the latest CCTV cameras all over places in Abuja, at least at all Federal institutions like the market at army barracks where this second bomb exploded.
I think we need to put this at the foot of the Nigerian army to ensure that they bring those concerned to book. Or maybe we are just over-worried. Maybe it is not actually a terrorist act. Maybe it was just some happy people who rank out of knockouts, bangers or firecrackers and could only use greenade bombs to celebrate the new year. Maybe it was just over-celebration and nothing to really worry about.
Well until the reports have been filled in and until we get a clearer picture of what really happened, we may not know the full details. The bottom-line however is that security situation in Abuja needs to be improved The last time we heard a bomb blast in Abuja was in October 2010 when MEND claimed responsibility. This is the second bomb blast in Abuja in a space of 3 months and I'm wondering, what really is our security threat level? Blue or Red? The Bomb exploded at around 7pm on Dec 31, 2010 in a popular mammy market near an army barracks in Abuja killing at least 4 people. Those behind this terrorist act must have wanted their act to be on the front page of newspapers in Nigeria for the News Year. What an awful news!
