Suppose the Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar(Turakin Adamawa) becomes President in 2011, how will Nigeria be? I have been thinking along this line too and it would be much easier for him to become president on the platform of the ruling PDP if and only if he wins the PDP primaries. But in order to emerge as PDP's preferred candidate, he would have to face the Jonathanian factor from a president who is growing stronger by the day. The GEJ of yesterday is not the GEJ of today as he is getting stronger and having a better grasp of Abuja politics.
Already, I read in the newspapers about Atiku and some other presidential aspirants issuing out a warning against blackmailing them because of the series of increasing bomb blasts in Nigeria which the Federal govt is insisting to be the works of GEJ's enemies. They claim the govt is trying to pin the bomb blasts and terror attacks on them in order to prevent them from achieving their political aspirations. Well, that may very well be another way members of the PDP family play their politics. But what if he was right? What if he was wrong and having the wrong assumptions? Well they are certainly playing politics in a funny way.
All eyes seem to be set now on the PDP primaries and each contender seems to be warming up, using every available tactics to boot out his opponents.
If Atiku Abubakar becomes the President of Nigeria, it would definitely change the face of Nigerian politics and that of PDP as a whole. It would be the outcome of power struggle between the older and younger PDP members. There would then be a much stronger pro-Atiku group than the OBJ or IBB group.
It may also give Atiku the chance to offer to Nigerians his very best, being at the number one position. Although it would be a tough task to outwit and win the incumbent, it would sure be a strong change of power.
In the case of Atiku Abubakar, if and when he contests the primaries, it may be capable of dividing the PDP sharply between North and South but it seems Jonathan is not exactly relying on core Atiku delegates but on the Middle Belt, some other Northern states and Southern Nigeria. The North sees 2011 as their time for winning the Presidential elections again and may find it easier to support Atiku than Jonathan. But again, there is the Jonathan and Sambo factor, which others could see as more beneficial to the interests of Nigeria.
If Atiku Abubakar wins the elections, it would really be the outcome of a hard won victory at the primaries and I'm sure he would have a landslide when the general elections hold. If he doesn't win the primaries, I'm guessing he may run on the platform of another political party just to achieve his ambition.Official campaign http://www.atiku.org

Can someone tell me why Atiku's campaign continues to emphasize "zoning" rather than his actual contributions to Nigeria as Vice President (if indeed there are any). He should stop expecting us to just hand him the presidency because he is from the north, but rather prove to us that he is a detribalized Nigerian looking out for the interest of the entire nation. So far, he has only played the ethnicity card (pretty lame if you ask me). Also, his campaigns of calumny against a sitting president show his complete lack of regard for democratic institutions. Several deliberately misleading reports from his campaign team attempting to hoodwink Nigerians into believing lies and deliberate misrepresentation of facts will not get him the presidency.
