It was really a show of skill and wits today at the PDP primaries holding at the Eagles Square in Abuja with the aim of selecting the party's flagbearer for the 2011 presidential elections.
Each presidential aspirant was called to the stage one after the other to give their speech on why PDP shoul elect them as their most preferred candidate. I had actuallly thougth it was only Jonathan and Atiku but it turned out that there were many other candidates including a female aspirant and the atmosphere was charged with politicking. Each candidate was given at most 5 minutes to deliver their speech although I don't know if they strictly enforced it.Sarah Jubril first gave her speech which was mostly supported by women and she did well in delivering it too.Atiku came after Sarah Jubril and gave his own written speech
Atiku's speech seemed to try to convince PDP delegates to vote him since he was tested, trusted, experienced and will keep to his word while at the same time reminding them that they was an agreement about power rotation which is being currently denied by his main opponent. The suspended Chairman Nwodo delegated his work to Bello Mohammed in order to chair the occasion of the day since he has been suspended by an Enugu high court from parading himself as the Chairman of the party.
Next after Atiku was Jonathan Goodluck
Goodluck started his speech after urging other people to take a moment of silence for late Yaradua. He was more outspoken and charismatic than other aspirants who came out. He received more supportt and cheers from the delegates who were gathered there. He gave a lot of instances where he had been successful such as stopping fuel scarcity, plan to privatize PHCN completely, security in the Niger delta and Nigeria's oil production, establishment of federal universities all over Nigeria and many more. After his speech, there was a standing ovation by everyone. After a while, voting by delegates started with Abia and then to the other states. President Jonathan from the onset was getting more votes and by a wider margin than Atiku and in the end Jonathan won and became the PDP official presidential candidate for 2011 elections. He got 2736 votes while Atiku got 805 votes. It was a smooth sailing victory for the President and given his good work so far, he would most likely remain Nigeria's president after this election
