Africa's largest and Nigeria's ruling party (PDP) has finally decided on who they want to be their candidate for the 2011 presidential elections and their chant seems to be, "In Jonathan we trust".
The Eagles Square was the location where the over 5000 PDP delegates who took time to vote for their favoured candidates. From the onset, President Jonathan was in the lead with more than 70% of votes by states. With this win and the PDP having a near monopoly of Nigeria's number one position, Jonathan would most probably remain Nigeria;s president after 2011 presidential elections . This would definitely help the PDP maintains its lead in the Federation and would probably give Sambo an opportunity to become president if he has any ambition to do so, after Jonathan.
The PDP seems to be more concerned about what would benefit the party as a whole than pursuing individual interests and with Jonathan, they feel he is a more trusted candidate to continue as president. The atmosphere at the convention was electrified and even more so when Jonathan began his speech and ended with a standing ovation by the members. Jonathan ended his speech by promising party members and Nigerians in general with the words, "We will not let you down".
