The Action Congress of Nigeria seems to be the only political party thinking out of the box when it comes to picking candidates for the 2011 Presidential elections. It has been normal for political office seekers in Nigeria to try and appeal for votes from the two religious sides(Christian and Muslim) being that they are the two most dominant groups in the country almost split evenly between north and south. Naturally and in line with the federal character, political parties are known to chose candidates from both sides in order to have national appeal and make it easier to win votes. Nigerians are deeply religious by nature and it would be hard for a Christian to vote for a Muslim and a Muslim likewise. Now what happens if a party presents 2 Muslims for the presidential race in an election such as the 2011 elections given that there has been strains in relationship between these two religions? It may cause that party to lose important votes. There is already a growing mistrust between Muslims and Christians when you recall the events that happened in Jos and Borno and even though majority of Nigerians may be civil about it, there seems to be a growing desire from each side to protect their interests. Here are the top Candidates for the 2011 General elections with their parties and religion
PDP:
Jonathan Goodluck (Christian)
Namadi Sambo (Muslim)CPC:
Muhammad Buhari (Muslim)
Babatunde Bakare (Christian)ACN:
Nuhu Ribadu (Muslim)
Fola Adeola (Muslim)ANPP:
Ibrahim Shekerau (Muslim)
John Odigie-Oyegun (Christian)How does the ACN hope to go far given that voters would have more options and be at ease voting for other political parties?

The duo are forward looking and credible Nigerians, they think they can make it on their individual merits but the political realites are something else. God save this great nation!!
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by POPOOLA OLATUNJI on March 08, 2011 at 14:42:22: ACN and its chief financier/dictator needs to be careful as nobody can take Nigeria for a ride any longer. To be frank, religion is a deciding factor when it comes to the issue of elections in the country.
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by adebisi Obafemi on March 11, 2011 at 22:08:40: Muslim-Muslim ticket is an illusion created by Tinubu and it will fail woefully even in Lagos State
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by Funsho on March 18, 2011 at 13:45:48: Actually, a muslim-muslim ticket does not matter, we have been having people from either side and the results have been bad governance. I think what really matters are people that will give the suferring masses of Nigeria dividends of democracy. These factors that are religious and ethnic inclined will not augur well for good gvernance as it promotes mediocres in goverment.
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by Tim on March 18, 2011 at 14:14:51: I don't think they are serious about winning the election.Religious consideration is a reality in Nigerian politics considering the fanatical posture of some sections of the country and the prevailing suspicions regarding the quest for Nigeria's membership of the O.I.C., shari'a, islamic banking etc.
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by Abubakar A. Wali on March 21, 2011 at 09:38:53: I believe the Ribadu-Adeola ticket is born out of sincere intentions. but the fact remains that, with the ethno-religious crises on the rise in the country, christians may be suspicious of the duo and refuse to vote for the ACN in 2011 general elections.
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by Ibrahim Soyoye on April 03, 2011 at 05:54:40: Insha Allah, it will possible for them. Because both of them are reliable person who hav good intension for Nigerians. And there is nothing bad to have same religion candidates, only what we need to observe is which kind of people they are.
Re: ACN and the Muslim-Muslim ticket Posted by Lukman Olawumi. on April 04, 2011 at 12:31:21: Since we know our country as a secular state, i think religions matters not in the selection of candidates for our constitution does against this. Inshaha-l-Lah they shall succeed through free, fair and credible election. 0‡0min.
