Why do earthquakes happen? That was my first reaction when I heard it from someone from an online community chat about a devastating earthquake in Japan. I checked the news and on CNN, you could see that the grounds on Japan in some cities had been torn apart. The city was also continuously shaking but thank God several buildings were built to withstand the quake using modern technology which Japan is known to be good at. I think somehow God prepares people before hand and before misfortunes do happen. This was the work of nature, the earth's crust keeps dividing as part of its aging process and to accommodate changes which can as well be linked to changes by man himself. Earthquakes may be nature's response to man's activities on earth and Japan is not the only place where it has happened. Our hearts go out to Japan and to those who have lost a lot in the events that has passed since. There are a couple of countries where earthquakes are more likely to happen and from reports this includes Nepal, Turkey, India, Ecuador, Philippines, Pakistan, El Salvador, Mexico and Indonesia. The earthquake was barely stopping when a Tsunami warning was issued by the govt and people were told to prepare for it. It seems with Tsunamis are more likely or certain to happen immediately after an earthquake and given that this is not the first time this has happened to Japan. I guess that was why they immediately issued a warning and one wonders what kind of Tsunami it will bring after a historic 8.9 magnitude earthquake just happened. What is a Tsunami? It happened in Haiti and some people had different opinions about it. Well here is what I got from Teachervision.fen.com
You can read more on TeacherVision: http://www.teachervision.fen.com/tsunami/resource/31101.shtml#ixzz1GWrzbmuJI watched the video scene over and over again on CNN and you could see the water from the pacific going over it's banks and was as high as 8ft taking and tearing anything in its path like ships, cars and trucks. Everything seems to be like a child's toy and paper as the force of the Tsunami on the water destroyed a lot of things. Though some cities in Japan remained untouched but everyone was shaken by the series of events and several cities were practically deserted and devastated. There are still a lot of people missing People had been urged to seek higher grounds as the water receded and they are already tens of thousands of people unaccounted for and the number of estimated dead keeps rising. The world weeps with Japan and is already helping to assuage their pains by sending in relies and donations. How Japan would recover from this disaster which the govt says is worst than that of WWII is still a big question. Japan was the world's second biggest economy about 2 years ago before slipping to a third after China overtook them and now with these events, it would need a miracle to recover quickly.

A tsunami (pronounced "soo-nahm'ee") is a series of waves generated by an undersea disturbance such as an earthquake. From the area of the disturbance, the waves will travel outward in all directions, much like the ripples caused by throwing a rock into a pond. The time between wave crests may be from 5 to 90 minutes, and the wave speed in the open ocean will average 450 miles per hour
