Nigeria has great potential for small and medium startup firms to grow and make a lot of sustainable income in the Long term since it is one of the top ten fastest growing countries in the world and has a sustainable market.
There are certain businesses that are profitable in Nigeria that can guarantee you a positive turnover due to the peculiar nature of the Nigerian environment such as high rate of poverty, low standard of living, high illiteracy rate, inefficient power supply, growth rate of telecommunication, high unemployment rate, high population figures and so on. Those are what I would call factors that make certain businesses viable in Nigeria.
In the light of all these, here are certain businesses I believe that can work well in Nigeria and a lot of startup businesses have used this to grow their companies over a period of time. Well here they are:- Internet cafes or cybercafes
- Pre-University tutorial centers
- Airtime/Recharge card reselling
- Information marketing
- Table/satchet water production
- Cooling services like Iced block production
- Motorcycle/Tricycle transportation service
- Web design and domain name registration
- Internet advertising
- Setting up online directories and content websitesThis list is by no means exhaustive and you are welcome to contribute you own idea on what businesses that work in Nigeria. Those are just some of the ones that I have seen that work in the long term for startups.

Re: Businesses one can do in Nigeria Posted by Felix Okoli on August 16, 2011 at 23:25:54: If you have something like N50,000, you can start something like a dry cleaning service even if you don't have a shop or office. You can do pickups from customers who know you and offer them that service.
Another easy business you can do with N50,000 is recharge card retailing. Just buy the cards in bulk at a discount and resell to end users.
A third kind of business on can do with N50,000 is online forex trading but only if you are trained for it. You can get internet access for a month for N7000 and then start doing the trading with a capital of even $100.
A fourth kind of business you can do with N50,000 is blogging. You can setup a blog with about N10,000 and then blog or write many articles on your blog, sign up with Google adsense to make money with advertising but it may take about 6 monts before you will start seeing good income.
A sixth kind of business you can do for small scale is bulk sms. You cana be a bulk sms reseller and make a good money from it by selling it to end users like ngos, marketers, religious groups or businesses and marketers
