It's official and I'm guessing a great number of Nigerians would celebrate at this news as the INEC chairman, Prof. Jega has declared the PDP candidate as the clear winner of the 2011 Presidential elections.
This is a great news for the millions and millions of Nigerian voters who expected Jonathan to win as it would have really been surprising if he did not seeing that a lot of people overwhelmingly voted for him. Here is the breakdown of the overall results and it was clearly between the Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress for Progressive Change:PDP: 58.89%
CPC: 31.98% There was really no close range, no need for run-offs with his closest rival from the CPC but with a clear majority, the incumbent President won in a landslide victory and will remain Nigeria's President and commander in chief of the Armed forces for the next 4 years. Jonathan won 25% of votes in 31 states in Nigeria.
Jonathan Goodluck had never run for office before to become president as he only became one when his predecessor died in office. Now with this most important election results coming out, he has proven to his critics that he is the most popular candidate for the race and his political career has just grown wings.
It was not exactly a race between north and south or between ethnic groups as a great majority from the different states of Nigeria voted for him. People who supported Jonathan's electoral victory included all ethnic groups such as Igbos, Ijaws, Yorubas, Hausas, Fulanis and most of the other tribes across Nigeria.
Although the former General Buhar has a huge following among his people in Katsina and some other states like Kano, Sokoto, Borno and Gombe, Jonathan was still able to get some votes from across those states and in the end, it all added up to making him to become the winner. One other reason why Buhari campaign did not really get much steam was because he was not able to penetrate the south as Jonathan was able to do in the north.
Jonathan was more of a national favourite than his competitor who only had strength in the North Western states
