Although I don't really support the strategy Buhari is using by stepping away from the ANPP for the CPC but somehow I think it is good for the ANPP to have a much better opportunity to field newer candidates rather than Buhari but for the former General to go to the CPC, a relatively new party and still expect to win the 2011 Presidential election? It may require a miracle!
Perhaps Buhari is big enough to win an election or at least bring some upset for the PDP and ANPP with his new found love and if his loyalists follow him wherever he goes.
I have been thinking; what if Buhari eventually wins the 2011 Presidential election, how would it feel like for him and for Nigeria? Well for him to win the election, here is what he would need:
- He would most likely win votes from core Northern states like Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Zamfara, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kebbi and some other core sharia states and so no need to campaign much there.
- He would need to break into and win Middle-belt states like Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory. Southern Kaduna, Brono and Gombe but this could be hard with the PDP already entrenched so I would suggest he goes south
- He would also need votes from the south to win but not from all states especially the Niger Delta as they would most likely support Jonathan and so I would suggest he looks at the South East and West
- He would need to choose a VP candidate from the south to help him win votes so selecting either a Yoruba or an Igbo would most likely earn him credit but most Igbo would easily support Jonathan and so a South western and Christian partner would be more favourable for CPC campaign in the South. Most Nigerians, especially in the south are not exactly thrilled with Buhari's campaign as being a former general, disciplinarian and Muslim make him look a little undemocratic, too strict and may favour Sharia law or even reverse capitalism. So in order to make him look appealing to both North and South, he would need to choose a Southerner and Christian to rest those issues. Comparing the Generals and Presidential candidates
We've had the Obasanjo Presidency and now both Buhari and IBB have shown interest in becoming president in 2011. How would I compare these three former Generals? Obasanjo is seen as easy going, IBB as cunning and Buhari as strict and also power hungry; having participated in elections 2 times in a row. Now with Obasanjo out of the picture, IBB and Buhari remain the only former Generals in the race. IBB seems to be working on a more popular platform than Buhari who relies more on the votes of the ordinary people and that may be his strength. Whichever way it plays out and who eventually gets more votes, only time will tell.Buhari Vs Atiku
The former VP candidate is also an influential politician from the North and a much younger politician running on the platform on the PDP as well. Although I think most Nigerians would prefer Buhari to an Atiku based on the results of the previous elections. What if Muhammadu Buhari wins 2011 elections?
It would be a hard feat for CPC to win votes nationwide, being a relatively new party and has not yet spread offices in various states but it could actually clinch the winning ticket for Aso rock. If Buhari eventually becomes Nigeria's next President after Jonathan in 2011, I'm thinking, Nigeria would be quite different. The fight against Corruption may take a more drastic approach and former politicians and civil servants may be probed much strictly. It may actually be a good thing and progressive for us to have a Buhari as President. We've had an OBJ and EGJ, why not let's try out a Buhari?
