With the growth of web content over these past years and with web publishing in developing countries like Nigeria also gathering momentum, it seems that there is a growth in the category of Nigerian websites already making the news.
At the start we had newspaper websites from Nigeria pushing most of the content and they still do, then followed by discussion forums and blogs, later on classified websites and trading portals. Now it seems that we also have a new category of websites where web developers are threading into and web owners are setting up as potentially successful internet start-ups. I'm talking about Q and A websites. What is a Q and A website?
Q and A simply means question and answer and it has to do with websites that are designed to accept questions and provide answers to end users or for the public. A Question and answer based site should allow the user to ask a question, check and retrieve answers if it is available or forwards an update to the asker's email when a new update is made on the question. In case you don't know exactly what a Q and A based website is, an example if Yahoo answers and another is Answerbag.com. These websites have been on the web for sometime but they may not have enough content that relate to Nigeria so there is a need for more Question based websites that are developed or updated by Nigerians who are getting on the web.
I have only seen a few local websites that have already been setup to offer this service and they include:- Ask Nigeria
- ShapShap
- Ajuju
- Google BarazaWhy they are not many Q and A websites in Nigeria
- Most of the Q and A software are not free
- Local Web developers are not keen yet on developing a platform
- Internet Startups are not willing to invest in this area yet
- IgnoranceHow Nigerian Q and A websites can make money
As long as there is useful web content, there will always be traffic and as long as there is traffic, there is money to be made. One way in which Question and anwswer website can make money is by means of PPC and CPM advertising. They could also bring in some income by means of offering it professionally for a monthly fee like Justanswer.com does
