It seems that it may already be official as students of the Lagos state university have protested the increase in their tuition fees from N25,000 to N250,000. Now, if you ask me, that is really unreasonable. About 1000% increase in fees? It seems that the school authorities want to reduce the number of youths going for higher education in the state. If this goes as it is, LASU may very well be the most expensive public school in the state, if not Nigeria. Now, it is a public institution which is meant to serve people and encourage the growth of the society. If this new price sets in, it may be good for the school, but really cause a huge problem for potential students. Most Federal universities I know don't charge as much as this unless may private institutions who have to fund operations themselves. Increasing the fees by such a high margin may make it look as if it is no longer a public institution and that brings another question, "Is LASU now a private university?". For the sake of the institution, it may be a good plan to increase school fees but not with such margin as it will further discourage academic pursuits of youths especially in Lagos state.
The sum of N250,000 is meant to serve as tuition fee per session and a session consists of two semesters, so for a student going on a 4 year programme, he may have to plan for N1,000,000 just for processing his registration for 4 years. Besides, students have a lot of other things they spend money on such as books, accomodation, feeding, transport and projects.
