One of the most controversial things Jonathan Goodluck has done in 2012 is his recent renaming of UNILAG to MAUL or MAULAG. Could you imagine? MKO was a good and noble man that is worth to be remembered and was the most popular politician in Nigeria during his time who won the elections but failed to become president. It's something worth remembering in Nigeria's history but should we kill one legacy in order to immortalize another legacy. If Unilag was a person, he would definitely feel offended by the recent gesture of the President who seems to have done so to favour only top wig politicians in the South West. But according to law, Unilag is actually a corporate person being registered by law to do business in its name.Moshood Abiola is a great name in Nigerian politics but UNILAG is also a great name in the Educational sector. Students dream to go to Unilag, people pray to graduate from Unilag, graduates hope to keep referring to Unilag in their CV, people hope to get honourary degrees from Unilag, Universities globally want to do exchange programmes with Unilag, students who wish to study abroad easily get admitted when they come from Unilag. Unilag has grown to a brand name for a period of 50 years so why kill it now?Was this a good political decision? I would say no because no right thinking graduate of Unilag or friend of Unilag would want to vote for Jonathan or a PDP government again seeing that they have little regard for the name - Unilag. If UNILAG were a man, he would have grand children now but Unilag has done much more than that. She has produced millions of graduates within that 50 year period and to throw away that name now, is really like killing the prestige of a person. If Jonathan Goodluck was a graduate of UNILAG, he would not have done what he did recently - No right thinking Unilag alumni would rename Unilag for any reason. Some people jokingly said that he did this just because Unilag refused to give him admission in the past. What I'm sure of is that this latest act by the president does not encourage grass root support for Jonathan or his party.
