Ever since the crash of a domestic airplane owned by Dana Airlines that cost over 150 lives, there has been a lot of buzz and news about the age of domestic airplanes in Nigeria and even frequent Nigerian travelers are now afraid of flying frequently and if they must, they'd really like to rather pay more to fly safer or rather go by road. Based on a newspaper report I read, I found out that most domestic airlines had planes over 20 years old and there were barely few which had planes less than 5 - 10 years old. Well some of the airline operators said that age doesn't matter but not everyone would want to believe that.So how old are airplanes really in Nigeria? I guess I'll just have to republish a report taken from http://www.ipaidabribenaija.com/index.php/latest-news/item/4289-historical-overviewnigeria-airline-industry:This is based on their Max ages1. Arik Air: 5.4 years
2. Air Nigeria: 19.2 years
3. First Nation: 19.3 years
4. Dana Air: 21.7 years
5. Aero contractors: 22.2 years
6. IRS airlines: 22.5 years
7. Overland: 25.6 years
8. Max Air: 25.7 years
9. Changai: 30.2 years
10. Kabo Air: 41.3 yearsNote: This is not a verified report but it shouldn't be far from the truthSo based on these estimations, it means that Arik airlines probably has the newest planes while Kabo air has the oldest planes. When next you want to take a domestic flight in Nigeria, it's good to know what your airline really has to offer. Does the age of an airplane really matter or affect the safety of passengers? Well it could since age can affect efficiency. However, other things could also affect the safety of a flight such as experience of the flight crew, maintenance, frequency of flights, logistics at the airport and so on.Checkout the source: http://www.planespotters.net/Production_List/Country/Nigeria
