With increasing violence in northern Nigeria spearheaded by Boko haram and religious crisis, politics in Nigeria may not be as smooth sailing for the region as it was during the 2011 presidential and general elections where surprise parties like the CPC made a strong showing. In 2011, there was massive turnout of voters mostly in the north who were Pro-Buhari and pro-CPC although the PDP did manage to win the required 25% minimum required constitutionally and the majority of national votes.Violence broke out in northern Nigeria, mostly in Pro-Buhari states soon after the general elections had been held and it was reported to be in reaction to CPC's loss to the incumbent and the belief that it was rigged by the ruling PDP in favour of Jonathan. Since then, peace has not really been sustained in the region and it is said that some top political figures have been marked for death by Boko haram who had from then intensified their violent acts against the Federal republic. The north has not been peaceful and united for over 1 or 2 years now and this could be affected political cohesion among northerners which may cause them to keep losing the presidential ticket and general elections to the ruling party which they had been protesting against in the first place. Will Buhari run again on the platform of the CPC or will Ribadu run in his place? Will the north be safe enough for voters to freely express their choice? If they do, will there be a large turnout of voters or will there be a state of emergency causing fear among voters? The north really need to be peaceful and united if they want to have a strong say in the 2015 electoral results else the region may keep losing political relevance amidst growing insecurity and economic backwardness.
