Although, Nigeria already has the highest number of internet users in Africa according to stats I once published from worldbank.org, chances are that, at its current rate, Nigeria may surpass the UK which for now only leads Nigeria by some few numbers. The United Kingdom has been leading Nigeria in internet usage due to her better infrastructure and long history of the internet. In many countries in Africa like Nigeria, the internet is still relatively new but is growing at a much faster rate than ever before, especially in this West African nation. As at 2007, Nigeria already had over 10 million users according to the chart and this was when the internet was still newly being introduced through the privatization of telecommunication. In that same year, the UK already had over 40 million users and that number had remained fairly the same till today, only recently growing to about 50 million. On the other side however, Nigeria's internet usage has grown from 10 million to over 40 million by 2009 - Just 2 years!Population
In terms of population, the United Kingdom has over 60 million people while Nigeria has about 3 times that with numbers running over 170 million. Besides, Nigeria has a larger number of young people than old unlike the UK where a significant number of internet users comprise of people over 50 years. In Nigeria, internet usage is made more popular by young people who are mostly in their teens. It seems that with Nigeria's internet growth rate, it may eventually beat about 3 other countries(Indonesia, Russia and Germany) to trail behind Brazil thereby making it the 6th country in the world with the highest number of internet users.Success Stories
Nigeria has had a lot of successful people who gained fame from the internet. The current president of Nigeria gained more popularity with his Facebook account before becoming president. Also Jason of Iroko TV runs a successful internet empire with Nigeria movies. There are many other successful stories of young Nigerians who are making an imprint in history through the internet boom.Source
