Why is it that most of the time when Nigerians go to Saudi for their pilgrimage that they would mostly be news of people either detained or deported? Is it that the Nigerian Muslims who are rich enough to travel to Saudi Arabia don't know the laws of the land they are visiting? It's a national shame that we have to read most of the time on the pages of the newspaper about pilgrims either being deported or arrested in Saudi Arabia and they are mostly Nigerians.
I saw the report on the front page of the Sun newspaper today and I don't normally read those kind of reports but I just said I should read this one to know the real reason why the Nigerians were detained and deported. The problem they had was that they were said to be travelling without their husbands or approved male companions. I guess the Saudis have a right to deny them entry if their laws do not allow women to move in public or travel without their husbands. I think for the sake of avoiding national shame, the Nigerian government also needs to be screening people going to pilgrimage to Mecca to see that they already conform to their laws rather than having to let them be deported on entry. I think if the law in Saudi requires female visitors to only come in with their husbands, then the Nigerian government should put a check on that and avoid us having to go through this national shame every year. When things like this keep happening, it only shows that our government is not doing their job well in screening would be travelers to Mecca properly. You shouldn't allow someone to travel when you know that he/she would be deported or detained for not conforming to the visiting nations's laws.We need to protect our national pride. This is not 1960. This is the 21st century.
