Reports in the news have it that the Minister of Finance's mother, Professor Kanene Okonjo who is aged around 82 years had been kidnapped in her farm and already the kidnappers are demanding a ransom. Now what could have inspired those kidnappers to kidnap an old woman in the first place? In fact it seems the kidnappers in Nigeria spend most of their time kidnapping old people rather than kids since the name connotes kidnappers. In Western nations, kids are mostly the ones that end up being kidnapped but in Nigeria, the reverse is the case as mostly old people are being kidnapped. This is a sad news for our country as kidnapping is taking over southern Nigeria as terrorism is taking over northern Nigeria. It is probably true that Okonjo Iweala by Nigerian standards is a rich woman in government but it is outrageous for them to kidnap an old woman.
Kidnapping is something that used to be alien to Nigeria since we are mostly conservative but now it is taking center stage mostly in the south east and south south. Why kidnap an old woman for money? What if the woman dies in their custody? In fact what they have done is not just criminal but ungodly and they have already being cursed. What is actually laughable is the amount the supposed kidnappers are asking for ransom. This is in the sum of $1bn and by Nigerian standards, I don't see any politician or person in government having this kind of money unless we are talking of few past govt officials or some ex heads of state who probably stole money. One billion dollars? I don't think Ngozi Iweala has that kind of money anywhere and I don't even think she would even want to pay kidnappers if she happened to borrow the money.
