Well I think it won't be a bad thing if unemployed graduates in Nigeria would be paid a monthly allowance since this would help reduce the rate of crime in the country. You'd find that most of the people who engage in things like kidnapping and terrorist acts are people who have been pushed to the wall and were basically just looking for a way to survive.Every govt in our world today knows that high rate of unemployment is normally directly proportional to the crime rate and countries with low crime rate normally have a low unemployment figure.Well, there are discussions already going on in support of this good gesture at the National conference being held in Abuja. The delegates are including unemployment allowance as part of their recommendation to the Nigerian govt as this would help make the country a much better one.For a long time in Nigeria, there has been a growing number of graduates which has hardly being matched with an equal number of jobs. In fact job creation in Nigeria had sort of slowed down compared to the number of graduates being churned out by Nigerian universities till date. Some of these graduates were really well educated in the universities but still are unable to get jobs since jobs were insufficient and many had to start fending for themselves. Some would normally be forced to join crime and in the end, it all spells doom for the nation. How will a nation survive if the number of unemployed graduates becomes more than the ones employed? Most developed countries like the USA tend to pay unemployment benefits to their citizens which are at least sufficient to help them survive and this in a way, helps keep the society safer. It is the duty of the govt to help create an environment whereby unemployment figures would be low and if they are unable to, they ought to at least make the society liveable for the unemployed people. The successful amnesty program which was launched by late Umaru Yaradua in a way helped reduce violence in the Niger Delta as many young men handed over their arms in exchange for a monthly benefit. It goes to show that people would be willing to live peacefully in a society if they at least have something to feed on.This recommendation on Unemployment allowance is a good one made by delegates at the National Conference but it would only remain a recommendations that does no good if the Nigerian government doesn't put them into action.I think it would actually be cheaper and more humane for the Nigerian govt to spend money on paying unemployed people some benefits rather than spending money on sending the military to fight terrorists and criminals who were pushed to that life as a result of neglect from the society. Most criminals would be willing to live a peaceful and lawful life if their govt at least show that they do care for them.
