It is really hard for the opposition to win a governorship election in Nigeria when an incumbent is also interested in doing so since the latter control most of the resources of the state. However, it seems that the only way to win such an election may have to be by presenting an ex-governor. This may be one of the tactics the ruling PDP may use in future elections in trying to break down the strongholds of the APC particularly in the South West. The governorship elections for Ekiti state have been held peacefully on Saturday 21st June 2014 and most of the results are already out. The PDP's candidate, former governor Ayo Fayose have been declared the winner based on results released so far. This brings to just 1 the number of former PDP states which has been recaptured after being lost to the AC(now APC) for 4 years.Ayo Fayose was a former governor of Ekiti state in South Western Nigeria for 29 May 2003 to 16 October 2006 before he was impeached by the State Assembly.
In this 2014 election, He didn't just win by a slight margin but by a landslide polling the most popular votes in all Local govt areas of the state over the incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi of the APC. This is the first state which the strongest opposition party in Nigeria has lost to the ruling party and may be a sign of what 2015 elections might be like.Ekiti people came out in their huge numbers for the vote and noticeable, it seems that they have voted for change. The President had earlier visited the PDP rally in the state and encouraged people to come out to vote and that all votes will be counted. It was adjudged to be a free and fair election whose outcome was readily accepted by many but some are concerned that some politicians who feel aggrieved with the result may want to cause violence in the state.According to reports published on the INEC website, a total of over 700,000 people registered in Ekiti state to vote and out of that number, only about 50% were accredited and did come out to vote. Ayodele Fayose of the PDP was reported to have received over 200,000 votes while his closest rival and incumbent governor, Kayode Fayemi of the APC got about 120,000.Peter Ayodele Fayose is expected to be sworn in as the next governor of Ekiti State by October 16, 2014.
