The dreaded Ebola virus is spreading fast and West African nations are already in despair since there is no official cure for the ailment which kills over 90% of its victims.Nigeria is not left out in this latest threat posed by Ebola which was said to have originated from Zaire and spread to mostly West African nations like Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leona. A recent report also confirmed that Ebola has gone airborne as a victim who recently flew from Liberia to Nigeria also infected the Nigerian doctor treating him in Lagos. The Nigerian government has been creating awareness of the disease which is said to be worse than HIV and they've been doing it through the media. Newspaper reports also have been carrying news about the killer virus that currently has no care and it comes with a couple of details on how to prevent it.For now, prevention is better than survival which is rare for the many victims that have contracted the virus. Some Nigerians believe that the solution would like with traditional medicine practitioners given that Western medicine has failed. Already, there is a rush for medicinal fruits like Bitter Kola which is said to improve the body's immune system, fights bacteria and reduces viral levels in the body. This rumour which might contain some elements of truth has also made bitter Kola scarce and increased its market price.A lot of awareness and education on the Ebola virus has been made by medical groups in Nigeria and preventive methods lies in keeping a good hygiene, frequent washing hands, avoiding bush meat,
It seems diseases like the Ebola virus tend to spread more during Nigeria's raining season than in the dry season. Not many people have died in Nigeria as a result of the disease. In fact no Nigerian has been officially reported to have died of the virus except for foreigners who came from other highly infectious West African nations to Nigeria.Already, the Nigerian government has stopped the bringing home of dead bodies in coffins from other African nations into Nigeria as a preventive measure. It is reported that the disease has an animal origin and has spread to humans and it mostly spreads through body fluids and only when the infected person has started showing signs of illness which includes fatigue, fever, headaches and so on. People have been asked to reduce their greeting modes and stop unhygienic washing of sick and dead bodies.Common things Nigerians now do to avoid Ebola virus are spending more time indoors, washing of hands, greeting without too much close contact, eating bitter Kola, drinking plenty of water, avoiding victims with cold and so on.Will Ebola spread in Nigeria? Will Nigerians survive Ebola? Only God knows.
