The prison walls and bars were said to have been bombed by rocket propellers while gunmen carrying heavy artillery entered the prison and ransacked the whole place. They were able to easily free the prisoners as there was little resistance from the prison guards some of who were injured in the process in an operation that lasted for more than 3 hrs.
Reports have it that most of those inmates were awaiting trial while just less than 2% of them had been convicted. Also, it was said that most of the released inmates were arrested Boko haram militants who were arrested by the Nigerian army in the ongoing war against the Islamist group.
As at the time of the report, Boko haram has not made any statement on the attack but with the way the operation was carried out, it is believed that the terrorists were fully armed just as Boko haram normally is.
