The results for the presidential primary election held at the Teslim Balogun stadium Surulere in Lagos are out and the former military ruler of Nigeria, General Muhammed Buhari has emerged as the winner. The APC gathering had 5 contestants who were all hoping to become their party's candidate for the election and they include Muhammadu Buhari(Former military ruler), Atiku Abubakar(Former Vice President), Rabi’u Kwankwaso(Kano state governor), Rochas Okorocha(Imo state governor) and Sam Nda-Isaiah(Newspaper publisher). The convention attracted delegates from all over Nigeria mostly from APC states to Lagos in order to pick a candidate that would best represent the APC at the presidential elections meant to be held in 2015. Already, the ruling party, the PDP has chosen the current president, Goodluck Jonathan to be their candidate while the nation waited for almost 24 hrs for the opposition party to choose theirs.News reports have it that the former General has emerged the winner and this is probably because he is already a tested hand and has a lot of grassroot support even among ordinary people in the north. However, Buhari's political weakness has mostly been in the south, a region where the current president has a bigger number of supporters. However, with Buhari's emerging the candidate of an opposition party that was formed as a result of the merge of 2 strong aprties with strenght in the North East and South West of Nigeria, things may be different this time. Buhari's strongest supporters are mostly in the North East where there are a lot of Fulanis and the South West where they are a lot of Yorubas. His alliance with the new formidable opposition party with strong political framework may very well be the tonic his political wheel needs to get Goodluck out of office.
This also seems to be a replay of previous elections held in the country as this would not be the first time the opposition would be choosing Buhari to compete against Jonathan or a PDP candidate in the election. In the last 2 times during which Buhari had been an opposition candidate, he had not succeeded to become president but many in the opposition still believe he is the best man for the job right now and may very well win in 2015.The history of Buhari's performance in general elections shows that Nigerians still love showing respect and love by voting for former military rulers and army officers. It might also just be because of the fact that Buhari's rule over Nigeria in the past made him more popular than other aspirants who are more of the young breed of politicians.Nigeria's presidential election will be held in February 2015 and the winner will be sworn in by May of the same year since it's the month during which the current president's tenure is meant to expire. What is the best way to remove an incumbent from office? Perhaps by presenting an already tested hand that is trusted. At the age of 71, Buhari may become Nigeria's oldest elected president in history if he wins in 2015 and may also make history to be the first politician to defeat a sitting president in an election.
