In the history of Nigeria, there has never been any ethnic group or tribe that has had more people dying in office like the Hausa/Fulani. Does it mean that the Hausa/Fulani are the most power hungry ethnic group in Nigeria? Does it mean that they can't do without being in power? Does it mean that they just love serving their father land even if it will cost them their lives?Yesterday, there was a publication on the newspapers of a political advert supposedly sponsored by a PDP governor in the South West giving a history of northerners who have died in office and why Buhari may very well be the next one if he ever gets there. Who knows? At the age of 72, if Buhari does win this year's election, he may want to go for 2 terms in office and that will be an additional 8 years to his age making him 80 years. Will he live to be up to 80 years? Well, only God knows but if at that age, he would have already lived beyond the age range which many Nigerians don't live to see and there is a high probability that he may die in office. If Buhari dies in office, he would be the 4th Hausa/Fulani and Northerner who has died as President/Ruler since Nigeria became a country.Well, let' be give you a breakdown of some of these northerners that died in the number 1 office since the 1960s:Murtala Ramat Mohammed: A military ruler that ruled for just year from 1975 to 1976 before dying as a result of an assasination in 1975 by another army officer. He died in office at the age of 37 years old making him the youngest Nigerian leader to die in office and when the capital office was still at Dodan Barracks in Lagos state.Sani Abacha: A military ruler from Borno state and a Kanuri who died in office at Abuja in 1998. Many people believed he was poisoned but it has not been proven yet and the official statement was that he died of a heart attack at the age of . He ruled Nigeria from 1993 to 1998.Umaru Musa Yaradua: This was the first civilian president to die in office and he was a Fulani from Katsina, a Hausa/Fulani dominated state in Northern Nigeria. He was elected under the platform of the PDP in 2007 and died 3 years later in 2010. He died after going for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.Muhammudu Buhari is now contesting to be president under the platform of the APC and if elected, he will be the oldest president Nigeria has ever had as at 2015. If he does win and becomes president at the age of 72, he might remain in office for another 8 years and may leave by the time he is 80. However, If he happens to die in office as a result of old age, he will be the 4th Hausa/Fulani to have died in office while serving Nigeria. We are not praying for that but only God knows the future.
