There has been a lot of reports lately concerning a statement credited to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Akiolu. He is alleged to have summoned Igbo leaders in Lagos and warned them against voting for any other party other than that of Ambode's. I really didn't believe that he could actually threaten Ndigbo and that it was a rumour until I watched the YouTube video of his speech. I've read a lot of reports in the news, listened to audio messages but later saw a video of the statement. I think watching a video is a more authentic way to confirm that someone said something or not. Some people have denied media reports that he issued any warning like that but this YouTube video confirms what he really said.Perhaps, he was misunderstood or he said what he said jokingly like a politician but it may not help the APC get more votes from the Igbos in Lagos but rather would encourage more Igbos to vote for the PDP.Most Igbo people don't believe in a monarchical or autocratic system or type of government that forces them to do something but rather one that respects their dignity and appeals to them, something a bit more democratic.A lot of people have reacted to the Oba's statement and it seems that Ndigbo in Lagos would officially show how they feel when the Lagos elections hold on April 11th 2015.Igbo people in Lagos are the second largest ethnic and political group living in the state after the Yorubas and they normally vote uniformly for a party they feel best represents their interest. During the last presidential election they voted massively for the PDP along with other minority tribes which saw Lagos votes split almost equally for the 2 main parties. We are not yet sure if there would be a repeat of the voting pattern by the time the governorship election holds but the 2 main political parties are really working hard to attract a lot of support from the Igbo tribe before then.If Lagos APC loses the election to the PDP, this recent statement by the Oba may be considered as partly responsible for the outcome given that most Igbo people are not be happy with it.

Even Obis and Ezes don't get absolute obedience from their Igbo men unless they beg them. On the D-DAY, Igbos will still vote for who they want.

You don't talk to an Igbo man the same way you talk to a Yoruba man. A Yoruba man may respond positively if you threaten them but an Igbo man is more likely to fight back.

I suspect many Igbo people would not even bother voting not because of the threat of the Oba but because they care less for who eventually becomes governor but if they do vote, they are still more likely to vote for the PDP.

He said what he said in a joyful atmosphere and really didn't mean it. You know the touts in Lagos normally say a lot of things they will do but they don't normally mean it. Akiolu was probably just acting like a tout at that instant but he really just wants Igbos to vote for Ambode and not Jimi. Nobody is going to die in any lagoon. Forgive his slip of tongue.
