Ahead of the gubernatorial election which is scheduled to hold in December, the PDP state chairman retired Colonel Sam Inokoba, Timi Alaibe, along with about 1000 party members have switched parties by moving to the APC at a rally held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Bayelsa. The former chairman of the PDP said that their reason for leaving was because the PDP-led state government had derailed from its original objectives. The governor of the state, Seriake Dickson is still a member of the PDP and didn't have as smooth relationship with the former state chairman and that may have been their reason for switching to the APC.Along with the Sam, Inokoba, anotehr stalwart of PDP in the state, Timi Alaibe, a former NDDC boss who served under a PDP government also decamped to the APC.Bayelsa stat is home to Nigeria's first Niger Delta President and seen as one of the major strongholds of the former ruling party. It is less likely that the actions of a few party members would dissuade majority of Bayelsians from voting for the PDP government when the time comes. Their betrayal however is more likely going to cause some weakness in the state PDP.During the 2015 Presidential elections, INEC reported that over 98% of votes in Bayelsa went to the PDP and just less than 2% went to the APC. Besides, since 1999, the last 3 governors of the state has been from the PDP and so it's going to be hard for the APC to grab the state. The governorship election election is scheduled to hold in December 2015 and only time will tell which party eventually carries the day. The 2 main candidates would be from the PDP and the opposition APC. The current governor of Bayelsa is entitled to run for a second term while some former governors are going to battle it out at primaries in the APC. Also, there seems to be a second term jinx in Bayelsa state gubernatorial elections as no elected governor has ever done a second term in office. Some predict that Henry Dickson will be the one to break that jinx. Well, only time will tell who eventually wins Bayelsa state.
