If Nigeria were to be renamed now that Buhari is in power as a democrat, one name we could give her that would sound cool is Buharia if I may suggest. Buharia is what I define as the new identity for Nigeria under a Buhari led govt. Buharia is Nigeria under Buhari's Presidency and I have to say, it's a truly changed country.Muhammadu Buhari is the 5th democratically elected President of Nigeria and the first politician to win a presidential election on the platform of an opposition party. He won mostly with the votes given to him by majority of Nigerians from the North and South West who were yearning for change. The former President, Goodluck Jonathan had been president for over 5 after taking power on May 5, 2009 after the death of Yaradua. Jonathan later won an election as a sitting President in 2011 and continued in office till 2015 before Buhari took office. To many Nigerians who voted for Buhari, there has not much been any improvement in their lives as they felt they have been impoverished by the government then and so wanted a change by voting for Buhari. Many of them felt dissatisfied with Jonathan's government but there were also many who still supported the former president and in the end, the results were in Buhari's favour, marking the beginning of change. As the new President of Nigeria, Buhari has show that he's a man of change by changing a lot of things in government, He has replaced a lot of public servants and changed the traditional way Nigerian Presidents normally appoint ministers. For over 3 months now, Buhari has been working without ministers but has merely appointed people in strategic places like in AMCON, NSA, NPA, FIRS and others. One of the promises Buhari made during his campaign was to make the Naira stronger and many reported that he would make N1 equal to $1 but some are still pessimistic about that promise given that the Naira has kept on crashing since after the elections.Under the Buhari's administration, it seems that there is an element of fear in public service as a lot of top names have either been replaced or retired and so the remaining ones seem to be working harder to please the President. Who know, perhaps the fear of sack was what some of them needed to improve their services to Nigerians. It's just about 100 days since Buhari came to power and many are already complaining that his appointments show a northern agenda as it has mostly favoured people from the north but they've been told by Buhari's party to be patient that all offices have not yet been allotted and that future appointments would include people from Southern Nigeria and not just the North. I guess it's normally and we shouldn't be quick in judging Buhari given that he's from the north and the normal thing for a Nigerian to do is please his brothers first before pleasing outsiders. Besides, the north contributed the most votes to Buhari and so Nigerians shouldn't be quick in claiming that he's only favouring the North. With the way I see it, no Nigerian President would be stupid enough to choose only people from the North to serve in his administration since Nigeria is made of both North and South and doing so would only destroy the nation. In Buharia, the office of the first Lady has been scrapped just as he promised during his presidential campaign. I guess it was because it was probably considered as a non constitutional office and a waste of funds. I have to say that Buhari is more concerned about saving public money than spending it. The first time Nigerians got to know about the office of a first lady was during the time of Ibrahim Babangida's administration during which his wife Mariam Babangida led the office. Since then, there has always been an office of the first lady but now it's gone thanks to Buhari. However, I do hear that there would still be an Office of the Wife of the President and the role of the first lady would just be limited to women and youth issues rather than doing things like issuing oil well license as was alleged to be the case in the past.Another good thing that is happening in Buharia is that electricity supply has improved. Personally, at my home in Lagos, we now have power for up to 15 to 20 hrs a day. However, Nigerians are still divided as to who is to be praised for this feat whether it was Jonathan who helped privatize the sector or Buhari who is yet to form a cabinet. Besides, we are still in the rainy season and we are not yet sure if electricity supply will remain good like this during the dry season. If it remains the same or improves, It would be a major achievement credited to Buhari. In Buharia, other things people are looking forward to is the fulfillment of the promise of creating a Social Welfare Program that would provide N5000 to up to 25 million people as well as the strengthening of the Naira to equal 1 US dollar. One thing I hope that the President and politicians would look into is in reducing the salaries and allowances of our Federal lawmakers. Federal lawmakers in Nigeria earn over $1 million per year as their income and that's huge enough. Perhaps they should take a pay cut.Since the President has show that he wants to reduce government spending, we do hope that the country would no longer face Budget deficit but rather a budget surplus as long as Buharia lives.
