In what appears to be like a commando style military operation, over 40 fully armed robbers raided banks located in the 4th avenue of Festac, Lagos, carting away millions of Naira in the process during the early morning.Witnesses report they came in through boats in a water canal heavily armed and with army camouflage dressing. They had bombs and ammunition and were able to break into banks using bombs at the highly secured bank doors and shooting guns to scare away people. People who were inside banking halls during their operation were all made to lie down while they moved from one bank to another to cart away several millions of Naira before the police were able to arrive. They shot bullets in the air and ended up killing a mother and her infant child in a neighbouring building during the process with a stray bullet. A motorcycle ride was also reportedly killed by a stray bullet. The bank robbers in Festac were able to escape through the same route the came in, the water canal and went with large sums of money although they left over N20 million after battling with some resistance from the Nigerian policemen who probably didn't have helicopters or a water vessel to pursue them.It seems like a lot of violence normally happens in Nigeria during periods before major feasts like Christmas, Easter or Sallah as it appears desperate young Nigerians are willing to make fast money before such celebrations. Who knows? Perhaps, they were looking for Christmas money. Armed robbers in Nigeria also seem to be getting more confidence in daring armed men of the Nigerian police as a result of the overstretched war against terrorists in the North which had given the Police a bad public image. It just seems as if many young men won't mind committing a crime if they feel they have more than enough ammunition to overcome policemen in Nigeria. The Police report has it that nobody died from either the armed robbers or the police during their gun battle and no arrests were made. It appears to have been a well planned out operation that has left many Festac residents worried. A lot of Kidnappings, armed robberies and assassinations have been happening in Festac for some time now making people feel it is no longer safe as it used to be.Despite the fact that media media agencies reported about this incident, there has been no pictures or video capturing the robbery and I wonder if those banks even had a working CCTV camera that can help the police solve the case. Nigerians are also waiting to see if banks are going to give their own side of the story such as how much they lost to the robbery.
