What is the right age for getting married in Nigeria? Nigerian law allows people to get married as long as they are at least 18 years and this is aroudn the time they finish secondary school. For women, this is good but for men, it's probably better to wait a bit like 4 or 5 years later. If you however already have multiple boy friends and girl friends and you have someone you truly love, then you should not wait any longer to get married because it's the mature thing to do. It's better to get married than keep having sex before marriage. If I had my way, I would have gotten married when I was in my early twenties as a young man but one of the reasons why I delayed it for later was because then I didn't have a reliable source of income and it won't make sense if I were to get married and have children without any sold plan for their future. I didn't remind myself that I had parents who could equally take care of them as grandparents and happily too. Many Nigerian men want to get married but one of the reasons why they keep delaying it is because of lack of financial resources. They have to pay a dowry, do a wedding party and still make their homes comfortable for their wives, in-laws and future children. A Nigerian man who has no reliable source of income or parents who can support him is more likely to delay his marriage for later rather than earlier and even in cases where their prospective Nigerian wife may be willing to offer financial assistance, most Nigerian men prefer not to rely on that assistance. In Nigeria, it's traditional for people to get married early rather than later because the more a person delays marriage, the harder it is to find a good partner. It's always better to get married while you are still young so that you too can grow to love each other better and grow old together. Besides, getting married early makes it easier for the woman to survive labour and numerous childbirths than if she was older. Getting married early for a man makes it easier for him to still have the energy to raise his kids and still be alive and active to see his grand children. In most traditional Nigerian families, both in Christian and Islamic ones, it is normally the parents that advise their children when to get married. They tell the man that it's time to get married and also recommend a wife for him. In the olden times, it was solely the choice of the parents to choose a wife for their son from a family and background they respect but nowadays, it's becoming more of a recommendation but the influence of the parents are still there. Best advice is to get married to people your parents recommend as long as you find them attractive and you know there is a possibility of you loving them and having children with them. Many Nigerians get married early within the age ranges of 20 to 30 but some wait till 35 and 40 to get married and this is becoming common among Nigerian men. The more a man or woman waits to get married, the lower their ability to produce children and that's why Nigerians are advised to get married earlier rather than later unless they don't really have any serious plans for having their own kids. So, in the past, many Nigerians got married early because they weer mostly farmers and had little education while also having the need to have many children to help in farm work and in wars. Nowadays, more and more Nigerians wait a bit longer to get married not because they would prefer to but because they feel they are not financially ready to do so.
