Why has Fuel scarcity become an annual problem in Nigeria? It's become so common every December for the ugly head of fuel scarcity to rise up and make life more miserable for Nigerians? Fuel scarcity makes life more costlier for Nigerians as vehicle owners have to spend more money on buying the scarce petrol available at black market prices and this makes transportation more expensive.During a fuel scarcity, petrol filling stations in Nigeria rarely sell fuel and when they eventually do, there are normally long lines of vehicles spending valuable time just to buy petrol for their engines. It can be a frustrating experience and Nigerians even endanger their lives by also buying them for storage in jerry cans at homes. One of the main reasons for fuel or petrol scarcity in Nigeria is because it's still subsidized by the government at the rate of about N87 per litre and when the oil importers don't get paid in time, they make petrol unavailable for the masses and this causes hardship for the ordinary people of Nigeria. One of the best ways to stop fuel scarcity in an oil rich country in Nigeria is to simply stop the subsidy and allow the market forces set the price themselves. Encouraging the working of our refineries would also help make fuel more available. It may cause the price of fuel to be a bit more expensive than normal but it's the best solution for the Nigerian situation in the long term.
